FULL DECISION SYSTEM — DISTANCE + DIRECTION

💡

Situation Example:

Distance and pin:
  • Distance 120y
  • pin position: 4y left, 5y front
Hazards:
  • bunker in front
  • water on the right side
Other factors:
  • head wind (very subtle)
  • fairway, grass agains the grain
  • elevation +4y (uphill)

1. Finding correct club

Step 1: Measuring 5% distance buffer

5% from 120y = 6y
There must be minimum 6y from front and back side of the green. Flag is 5y from the front which moves our target 1y behind the flag. Total of 121y.

Step 2: Adding hazard distance buffer

Bunker at the front: we add extra 2y to the 5% buffer
This moves our target from 121y to 123y. 3y over the flag.

Now we add distance and side adjustment based on other factors

Step 3: Adding adjustment for lie angle

ball is in the fairway with grass growing agains the direction of play. here we have to add approximately another 3y of distance. This moved our target to 126y

Step 4: Adding adjustment for wind

Subtle head wind will make ball go shorter, we need to add approximately another 2y to the distance. Now our target get from 126y to 128y.

Step 5: Adding adjustment for the elevation

green is elevated 4y which means we need to add another 4y to the distance. Movin our target from 128y to 132y.

Distance conclusion:
120y to flag
+1y 5% buffer
+2y extra bunker bu
+3y for lie angle
+2y for the wind
+4y for the elevation
💡
Final distance play: 132y
Based on my shot patter info my closes club is 9i which fly on average 135y. This would be the right club to take.

2. Finding correct Aim point

Step 1: Measuring 5% distance buffer

5% from 120y = 6y
There must be minimum 6y from both sides of the green and flag. Flag is 4y from the right which moves our target 2y left of the flag.

Step 2: Adding hazard distance buffer

Water from the right: we add extra 3y to the 5% buffer
This moves our target extra 3y to the left. Total 9y left from the right edge of he green

Step 3: Adding adjustment for wind

There is no side wind so we do not have to adjust aiming for wind. keeping our target 9y from the right side of the green.

Step 4: Adding adjustment for lie angle

Ball is on a flat ground, not below or above the feet, no need to adjust aiming because of the lie.

Step5: Adjust for shot pattern

My 9i on average finishes 2y left of my intended target. This means I have to aim 2y right to compensate for that.

Aiming conclusion:
Pin is 4y from the right edge
aim extra 2y to the left to have 6y buffer from the right side
aim extra 3y to the left because of the extra buffer from the water hazard
no wind adjustment
no lie adjustment
Shot pattern average is 2y left so I have to aim 2y right
💡
Final aim: 7y from the right edge of the green (3y left from the pin)
Considering all the variables above, the best and safest option to aim is 3y left of the pin position.
💡
FINAL DECISION
132y shot - 9iron
Aiming 3y left of the pin
