Identify all visible trouble
Look carefully down the hole and spot anything that can cause a penalty or a difficult recovery.
This includes:
- Fairway and greenside bunkers
- Water hazards and penalty areas
- Out of Bounds (OB) markers
- Trees or wooded areas
- Light or heavy rough
- Slopes or collection zones that feed the ball away from the fairway
- Tight landing zones or narrow sections of the hole
👉 The more clearly you see the hazards, the easier it is to plan around them.
📝 Tip:
Understanding stroke penalties allows you to prioritize which hazards truly matter.
A fairway bunker might only cost half a shot — but OB or water can cost two or more.
